Do This Before Holiday Break
Burst pipes, theft, and vandalism are just a few risks that ramp up when staff and students are away. Follow these tips to lay the foundation for a safe holiday and smooth return in the new year.
Set thermostats to at least 55 degrees
Frozen pipes are the leading property-related risk when the temperature drops. It might seem like a good idea to save money over long weekends and holidays by turning the heat down or off. Unfortunately, many school buildings are decades old and less energy-efficient than their modern counterparts. Protect against costly flooding by letting boilers run and keeping interior temperatures above 55 degrees Fahrenheit whenever possible.
Stay on Top of Claims Notifications
The Texas Workforce Commission could send unemployment compensation claim notifications to school districts during the break. Don't miss your opportunity to respond within state-mandated deadlines. Opt into Texas Workforce Commission electronic correspondence or assign someone to monitor the mail during the holidays.
Secure School Facilities
When you go on a long vacation, do you set your lights on a timer and ask your neighbors to keep an eye on the place? You can apply those same strategies to protect against theft and vandalism in the absence of watchful employees and students.
Navigating New Bus Seatbelt Regulations
Senate Bill 546 requires that all school buses operated by or contracted for use by a school district be equipped with three-point seat belts for every passenger, including the driver. Districts that claim budget limitation exceptions must submit a detailed report to the Texas Education Agency by May 29, 2026.
