What to Know About New AI Training Requirements
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly part of everyday life, Texas has introduced statewide standards to promote the responsible and effective use of AI technologies.
The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) requires state and local government entities, including school districts, to ensure completion of a certified Artificial Intelligence (AI) Awareness Training program on an annual basis. These statewide requirements are in accordance with Texas Government Code Sections 2054.5191 (transferred to Government Code 2063.103 by HB 150, 89th Legislative Session) and 2054.5193.
Key Requirements:
- Only the district’s cybersecurity coordinator is required by the State to complete the annual certified AI training.
- Additional AI training for staff is optional and at the district’s local determination, in consultation with the cybersecurity coordinator (Education Code 11.175(h-1).
- All required training must be completed and reported to DIR by August 31 each year.

DIR certifies AI training programs each year, with all certifications valid through August 31. There is no cost to submit a program for evaluation, and applications are accepted year‑round.
