Cybersecurity Training Program Certification
October 2, 2019
In June 2019, the Texas legislature passed HB 3834, which requires annual cybersecurity training for elected officials as well as school district employees. The required annual cybersecurity training must be completed by June 14, 2020.
This legislation directed the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) to certify at least five programs to provide the required training.
Districts interested in seeking certification for a training program can submit a curriculum for consideration to DIR.
The deadline for submission is October 4, 2019. However, programs submitted after this date will still be considered on a rolling basis.
Districts who employ a dedicated information resources cybersecurity officer may select a training program of their choice if it satisfies the following statutory requirements.
- Information security habits and procedures that protect information resources;
- Best practices for detecting, assessing, reporting, and addressing information security threats; and
- Proof of Completion
In this case, districts must request a program exemption.
Additional information can be found on a DIR website FAQ. Any other questions relating to HB 3834 and the annual cybersecurity training requirement may be directed to TXTrainingCert@dir.texas.gov.
