Cybersecurity Training Program Certification

November 7, 2019

In June 2019, the Texas legislature passed HB 3834, which requires annual cybersecurity training for elected officials as well as school district employees. The required annual cybersecurity training must be completed by June 14, 2020.

This legislation directed the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) to certify at least five programs to provide the required training.

Update

DIR has evaluated the initial submissions for cybersecurity training and certified 19 programs. Download the list of programs with vendors, titles, and additional information. All the listed programs will satisfy the state cybersecurity training requirement created by HB 3834. Additionally, districts that applied for exceptions are included on the list.

Exemptions

Districts who employ a dedicated information resources cybersecurity officer may select a training program of their choice if it satisfies the following statutory requirements.

  • Information security habits and procedures that protect information resources;
  • Best practices for detecting, assessing, reporting, and addressing information security threats; and
  • Proof of Completion

In this case, districts must request a program exemption.
