About TASB Internships

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is seeking a business intelligence intern as well as a privacy and cybersecurity analyst intern to join the TASB Risk Management Fund (Fund) team. Both internships will extend 10 weeks during summer 2024. Selected candidates will work from TASB Headquarters in Austin, Texas.

About the Fund

The TASB Risk Management Services area administers the TASB Risk Management Fund, one of the largest and most successful public education risk pools in the country. While the Fund is not an insurance company, its operations closely mirror a mid-size non-profit mutual insurance company including claims, underwriting, risk management, financial analysis, and other risk-related activities.

Privacy and Cybersecurity Analyst Intern

As a privacy and cybersecurity intern, you will work with our primary privacy and cybersecurity consultant as well as a team of skilled risk management professionals on initiatives that support the TASB Risk Management Fund. You will work on a variety of research and analytical projects that support the Risk Solutions team and assist in administering the ongoing cybersecurity grant program.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Research emerging cybersecurity threats and trends in order to develop articles for the Fund’s InsideRM blog.
  • Assist with administration of the Fund’s cybersecurity grant program. This would include vetting vendors requested by districts and responding to other general queries.
  • Engage in guided research to support premium cybersecurity resources for fund members and to contribute to conference presentations and webinars.

  • Strong writing and research skills and familiarity with topic-specific resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a college level cybersecurity, data, or computer science program.
  • Available to work 15 hours/week for up to 10 weeks during the summer of 2023.
  • Proficiency with MSOffice Suite
  • At least one technical certification (A+, Security+, Network+, CEH, etc.).
  • Interest in education, cybersecurity, risk pooling, or insurance environment preferred.

Business Intelligence Intern

As a BI analyst intern, you will work on a team of skilled BI and data professionals on initiatives that support the TASB Risk Management Fund. You will leverage tools and technologies, such as SAP Business Objects, SQL, R, Python, Power BI, and ArcGIS, blended with internal and external data sets, along with analytical thinking to assist in driving forward key data projects.

Past Interns have completed projects like:

  • Combining internal data with open source weather data to develop a decision-support tool for management and senior staff to track real-time exposure to severe weather.
  • Exploring text mining and predictive modeling opportunities, including linear regressions, decision trees, and random forest algorithms within claim datasets.
  • Analyzing legacy-system data fields for data mapping and reporting opportunities.
  • Export network graph opportunities using member contact datasets.
  • Analyzing internal data and developing member engagement metrics to be consumed in a Power BI dashboard.
  • Presenting analyses and recommendations to senior TASB staff.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Identify, design, and implement internal data improvements: automating manual processes, and optimizing data delivery for greater scalability, etc.
  • Create and modify dashboards and reports based on project requirements
  • Develop documentation for dashboards, reports and data sources

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to draft business reports and correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Sophomore or Junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS/CIS, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical degree.
  • Available to work 40 hours/week for up to 12 weeks during the summer of 2023.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Understanding of relational databases.
  • Proficient with SQL
  • Experience with R, Python is preferred
  • Knowledge of SAP Business Objects, PowerBI, Tableau, or other BI tools is a plus
  • Interest in education, risk pooling, or insurance environment preferred.
