MemCon17 Conference ImageWe enjoyed the chance to visit with members at MemCon17 April 23-25 at Hyatt Regency Austin. The conference kicked off with food for thought at Knowledge Café sessions, followed by several opportunities to learn, connect, and succeed...

Knowledge Cafe

During breakfast, members kicked off each day with food for thought in the Knowledge Café. In these sessions, TASB Leadership Team Services (LTS) Consultant Orin Moore and Division Director Phil Gore covered the importance of candor and communication.

MemCon17 kickoff

TASB Risk Management Fund Board Chair Ted Beard connected the taglines of the conference Learn, Connect, and Succeed to events in his own life and motivated members to take advantage of all the conference had to offer.

Keynote speaker Kay Kight

The conference opened up with Keynote Speaker and acclaimed violinist Kai Kight, who walked through the audience playing his music and then went on to share how his mom inspired him to “take the stage”, encouraging others to do the same.

Legislative update

Ruben Longoria, assistant director of TASB Governmental Relations, and Paul Taylor, division director of TASB Risk Management Legal & Regulatory Affairs, gave updates on public education issues in the current legislative session.

Ethics session

Paul Liebman, chief compliance officer at The University of Texas at Austin, led the final general session on the importance of acting both legally and ethically.

Coverage credit drawing winners

At the close of the conference, three members were selected to receive $1,000, $3,000 and $5,000 in coverage credit. Winners were Hamshire-Fannet ISD, Garner ISD, and Belton ISD, respectively.

Educational sessions

The 16 educational sessions were led by subject matter experts from across TASB, including, HR Services, Facility Operations, Legal Services, Policy Services, and of course Risk Management Services.

Why we do what we do

TASB RMS Associate Executive Director Dubravka Romano spoke to MemCon17 attendees about how appreciative we are of school professionals and the work they do for education organizations.

"We do what we do so that you can do what you do," she said.

She shared stories of how the Fund has provided tools to educational entities to help them do what they already do best.

Focus on fitness

MemCon17 attendees were able to stay focused on fitness, with daily morning yoga sessions and a Fund Run/Walk along Lady Bird Lake Tuesday morning.

Showcase

In addition to Hartford Steam Boiler and Scenario Learning, the following TASB entities were represented at the Showcase of TASB Services and Fund Vendors: BoardBook, BuyBoard, Facility Services, First Public, HR Services, and Special Education Solutions.
