October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October 09, 2017 Kristen Pham

October is recognized as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, although it is an important issue to be aware of all year long.

The first step to preventing an incident is to develop security measures if your organization does not already have them in place. Below are some tips from the Fund on how to get started:

  • Protect your data, especially Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This includes social security numbers, drivers’ license numbers, credit card numbers, banking records, birth dates, and medical information.
  • Train your staff on data protection and cybersecurity topics such as PII, phishing scams, and password security.
  • Assess your software and vendors.
  • Keep your software up to date; install latest software versions and patches.
  • Upgrade your computer hardware if it cannot run a currently supported operating system.
  • Conduct annual vulnerability and security scans and assessments.
  • Consider cyber/data breach coverage.

If you are a member of the Fund’s Liability or Property program, Privacy & Information Security is already included in your coverage. The Fund partners with Beazley, one of the world’s premiere providers of information security and data breach response services, to provide this coverage. Visit the Fund’s Privacy and Information Security webpage for more information.
