National Poison Prevention Week: March 20-26, 2011

Accidental poisoning occurs most often in homes, but the dangers of chemical poisoning in schools may be more common than you think. The third week of March is designated as National Poison Prevention Week and school districts should take this time to address areas of concern within districts. School districts have many areas where chemicals can be easily accessed such as custodial closets, cafeteria storage areas, maintenance shops, chemistry labs, and even in classrooms. All chemicals should be stored in locked cabinets or closets. Custodial closets, storage rooms, and other rooms where chemicals are stored should always be locked. Other precautions should be taken to avoid misuse or an accidental poisoning from occurring, such as following proper use directions.
