Gearing up for a Safe Holiday Season
'Tis the season! Family gatherings, decorations, social events, and the arrival of colder weather are just some of the best parts about this time of year. It is a time to be joyous, but when accidents occur it puts everyone in a scrooge mood. The tips below will help you remain safe while enjoying the holidays so you won’t miss the festivities.
When you want it to look a lot like Christmas:
-
Use a ladder or step stool that is in proper working condition and the correct height for the task
-
Use UL-approved strings of lights that are in good condition without frayed cords, missing bulbs, or loose connections
-
Use no more than three strings of lights per extension cord
-
Use light hangers-not staples-to hang the lights
-
Use built-in grips to pull plugs from sockets; don’t pull from the cord
When the weather outside is frightful:
- Pay close attention to wet spots and icy conditions that could lead to a slip
- Install heavy-duty mats around entrances so people can wipe their shoes and not track slippery material inside buildings
- Use guard rails for extra support when walking up and down stairs
- Leave early to prevent being in a hurry during bad weather
When it’s time to prepare figgy pudding:
- Use sharpened knives when cutting or chopping food
- Always use a cutting board with a damp towel underneath to cut or chop food and never cut food in your hand
- Keep potholders, towels, and curtains away from a heat source
- Never leave food being prepared on a stove or in an oven unattended
When it’s time to roast chestnuts on an open fire:
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplace; it can create a large fire that may grow to become uncontrollable
- Seek advice on safety precautions to use when frying a turkey
- Never leave candles in a room unattended and ensure they are in a stable container and placed away from combustible materials
