Sun and heat can harm us in many ways such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and sunburn. This Loss Prevention Hot Topic will detail ways to prevent injuries and illnesses caused by sun and heat exposure.

7 hot tips to help prevent heat related illnesses:

  • If you know you will be working in extreme temperatures, you should gradually acclimate yourself to the heat.
  • You should drink plenty of water, and avoid drinks with alcohol or carbonation as these liquids will increase the chance of dehydration.
  • Take frequent breaks in a cool area but do NOT cool the body down quickly; instead cool the body gradually.
  • Dress appropriately with loose “breathable” material such as cotton and try to wear light colored clothing that reflects the heat.
  • Wearing gear such as cool packs is a beneficial way to keep cool while working in the heat as long as the added weight or bulkiness of the gear doesn’t cause a safety hazard.
  • If at all possible use fans, exhaust systems, or air conditioning to keep the work area cool.
  • When working out in the sun, it is best to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF rating of 30 to prevent serious sunburn.

Whenever working in the sun or hot environments it is always advisable to use precautions and to plan ahead to avoid heat related injuries and illnesses. The information in this hot topic should provide you with enough information to allow for a safe and healthful summer.
