Requirements for Hand Sanitizer Dispensers
The Life Safety Code requires certain elements to be met when installing and storing hand sanitizer dispensers. Over the past few years, more school organizations have been installing hand sanitizer stations throughout their campuses. The questions to be answered are, “Are these dispensers properly installed," and "Is the excess being stored properly?” Below are the requirements from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code- 14.3.2.4 Alcohol Based Hand Rub Dispensers.
Alcohol-based hand-rub dispensers should meet the requirements of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 8.7.3, unless all of the following conditions are met:
- Dispensers shall be installed in rooms or spaces separated from corridors and exits.
- The maximum individual dispenser fluid capacity shall be as follows:
- 0.32 gal (1.2L) for dispensers in rooms
- 0.53 gal (2.0L) for dispensers in suites of rooms
- The dispensers shall be separated from each other by horizontal spacing of not less than 2 feet or 48 inches.
- Storage of quantities greater than 5 gallons (18.9 L) in a single fire compartment shall meet the requirements of NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code.
- The dispensers shall not be installed over or directly adjacent to an ignition source.
- Dispensers installed directly over carpeted floors shall be permitted only in rooms or spaces that are equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.
