Mitigation/Prevention

Prevention and mitigation efforts are attempts to prevent hazards from developing into emergencies or to reduce the damage should an incident occur. This phase differs from the other phases in that it focuses on long-term measures for reducing or eliminating risk. It begins with a hazard assessment to identify and evaluate risks and vulnerabilities that need to be addressed. The implementation of mitigation strategies is a part of the recovery process if applied after a disaster occurs.
Prevention/mitigation activities may include:
- Hazard assessment
- Safety and Security Audit (TEC 37.108)
- Climate survey
- Prevention programs
- Access control policies and procedures
