Emergency Management and School Security Program
Introduction
School districts are expected to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students. Statistics show that schools are among the safest places for children to be; however, schools are vulnerable to the same hazards as the communities and neighborhoods they serve. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires, and tornadoes can strike a community with little or no warning. Crime, accidents, infectious diseases, and school violence are only some of the human-caused emergencies that a school must be prepared to manage. Schools must develop systemic plans and training to prevent, mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from any critical incident that may occur.
