Loss Prevention Resources at Your Fingertips

by Charles Hueter

The TASB Risk Management Fund has many members with a variety of safety training and communication needs. One school district may have a persistent problem with claims arising from slips, trips, and falls while another may not possess any training materials on the importance of hazard communications (HAZCOM). Preventing losses begins with good information and this is why we have so much freely available for our members.

By enrolling in the Workers’ Compensation or Property/Casualty pools, you become eligible to access a wealth of information both on line and offline. MyTASB (http://my.tasb.org) is the place to start. Under Workers’ Compensation Resources you’ll find the two primary Loss Prevention areas:

The Manual, once a monster in a 3-ring binder, is now fully electronic. It is the go-to guide for essential information on facility security, accident prevention, training, and supervising for safety. It contains dozens of downloads covering these topics so you can strengthen your knowledge at your own pace. The Loss Prevention Safety Kit is located here, providing you with easy-to-use payroll stuffers, posters, and topical handouts for staff safety meetings.

The Video Library is an important resource that many members have never utilized. It has hundreds of videos on a whole universe of topics such as:

  • Kitchen Safety
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • HAZCOM
  • Back Safety
  • Defensive Driving
  • Heat Stress
  • Ergonomics
  • Lockout/Tagout

Most programs are on VHS tapes (though DVDs are an increasing part of the library) and many are available in Spanish. Each year we expand our collection to include more subjects so it pays to check the myTASB periodically. Renting from us is easy! Just contact Charles Hueter at 800.482.7276, extension 6305, and we can discuss your needs. You may borrow up to three videos from the library for up to 30 days.

Though these resources are on line, it pays to remember we still have important offline resources available. In addition to our borrow-only library, we have a 3-DVD set containing a fantastic primer on a variety of subjects that you may keep. The DVDs introduce you to:

  • School District Driver Safety (English and Spanish)
  • Custodial Safety Awards (English and Spanish)
  • Back Injury Prevention
  • Blood Borne Pathogens
  • HAZCOM
  • Safety Orientation
  • Classroom Safety
  • Kitchen Safety (English and Spanish)

Broken out into five volumes, our Loss Prevention safety handbooks are excellent job-specific sources of information regarding common hazards facing the following types of work:

  • Administrative/Instructional
  • Custodial (English and Spanish)
  • Food Service (English and Spanish)
  • Maintenance (English and Spanish)
  • Transportation (English and Spanish)

Materials relating to Workers’ Compensation situations are available for members of our WC pool. Similarly, materials relating to Property/Casualty situations are available for members of our P/C pool.

If you would like to request a rental video, DVD set, or safety manuals please contact me via phone at 800.482.7276, extension 6305.
