Get Ready for the 2012 Loss Prevention Grant
By Charles Hueter
A maintenance person must use the top step of a rickety old ladder to change light bulbs in the gym. Employees joke about the slick spot that always forms near an entrance when it rains. One campus has been around so long it seems like everyone in the community has a spare key. A bus barn becomes shrouded in darkness when evening approaches during winter. Flammable materials pile up in closets where paper products are stored.
These are situations Fund members encounter on a daily basis. They are the little issues we put up with or ignore in order to focus on more pressing problems. When meeting the challenge of educating students, sometimes things have to be prioritized. However, this does not mean the little issues go away.
The Fund Board has generously provided another $550,000 for the grant this year.
The purpose of the Loss Prevention Grant is to provide funding for these issues so they do not get the chance to become pressing problems. Buying a scissor lift costs a lot of money, but the costs of a fatal or crippling injury are greater. That employee will be changed for life and that claim can live on longer than you would expect. A comprehensive rekeying of a campus can be expensive, but the costs of vandalism and theft add up over the long run.
If you are a member of the Workers’ Compensation, Property, or Auto coverage pools, we invite you to apply for a Loss Prevention Grant. The 2012 online application opens for business on Monday, January 2nd and gives you the opportunity to edit and modify your application all the way through Friday, March 2nd. You could be eligible for up to $4,000 that can be spent on equipment, services, and training to protect your employees and your property.
Take the time to ask your Loss Prevention consultant about the program. He or she may know of problems that could be addressed for relatively little money that, if left unchecked, could pose serious hazards. The application is easy to use and we are ready to answer your questions. The grant is a competitive process so discussing your application with us ensures you submit a well-justified request.
The Fund Board has generously provided another $550,000 for the grant this year. Over the 15 years of the program’s life, we have returned more than $5 million back to Fund members so they truly can focus on the big problems they face. If you have applied before, we applaud your dedication to loss prevention and strongly encourage you to return this year. If you have not applied, make this the year you give it a shot.
